Virtual Reality can be described as a software-created simulated environment which is presented to the user in such a way that they fell like they are actually experiencing it in person.
Virtual Reality finds its usage in many different areas: including gaming, educational simulations, and medical treatmentsas well as the exploration of virtual worlds, such as in virtual tourism or virtual presences.
Summary
- Unlike AR, VR is a closed off experience in a virtual world
- It is only available through dedicated devices either using a headset and a mobile phone or by using a dedicated Head Mounted Device (Oculus Rift, HTC Vive, Playstation VR etc).
- Most HMDs need an external computing source to run the VR simulation
- However devices such as the Oculus Quest 2 and the less powerful Oculus Go are stand-alone devices which do not need a powerful computer.
- The compute power of these devices is therefore limited meaning the simulations are generally not as complex as is achievable through “wired” solutions
- VR can be used for
- Virtual trainings / onboardings
- Entertainment
- Education
- Virtual Presence
